![]() ![]() It's biggest benefit may be that it provides an opportunity to break free from expensive monthly subscriptions. ![]() For what it does, though, GIMP serves users well. This will also be disappointing to some Photoshop users. There are also no adjustment layers in GIMP. It just doesn't yield the same results as it does with Photoshop. This is probably due to the fact that creating text with GIMP leaves a lot to be desired. One item that users will find missing is a Text menu. The Help tab will take users to a large amount of documentation that can be very helpful in learning the ins and outs of the program. There are tabs for File, Edit, and View in addition to Image and Filters. The menus at the top of the screen are standard. Users can customize the panels to their own liking by removing some features and adding others, but the process is far less intuitive than it is with Photoshop. ![]() There is also a separate panel for tools. Panels are used to display features like brushes, palettes, and paths. With that being said, the Adobe purist will still become frustrated with how GIMP handles some of its features. Individuals with Photoshop experience will have no problems making the transition to GIMP, and doing so could save them hundreds of dollars each year. The UI for GIMP looks very familiar to Photoshop. Linux users have always been aware of the program's usefulness, and it is even packaged with some Linux distributions. This can be credited to software improvements and the availability of the program for Windows. This can come in handy when you're multitasking with multiple projects at a time or setting custom workflow presets.Overall Opinion: GIMP has been around for many years, but it is only recently that the program has mounted a strong challenge to the dominance of Photoshop. What's unique about Affinity Photo is that it has a feature called "Persona" that allows you to switch between different editing modes, such as Photo, Liquify, Develop, Tone Mapping, and Export, depending on your needs. However, Photoshop has a wider range of effects and filters, such as the Adobe filter gallery and Neural Filters, which are not available in Affinity Photo. When it comes to the tools themselves, both Affinity Photo and Photoshop have a comprehensive set of editing tools, including brushing and cloning tools. However, it has a more colorful design that makes it feel more user-friendly, while Photoshop's design is a little complicated. Just like Photoshop, Affinity photo also has a tool palette on the left, properties on the top, and finally, layers, histograms, and adjustments on the right. In fact, both apps are pretty similar in terms of their layout as well. That means you can switch from Photoshop to GIMP right away without having to interchange file formats of the projects you're currently working on. In December 2021, it also received a major update that allows GIMP to support PSD files natively. It also has a built-in file manager, similar to Adobe Bridge, that makes it easy to manage and edit your files.Īdditionally, GIMP is free and open-source software and it receives frequent updates that improve its functionality. GIMP also boasts an extensive plugin library, including the highly sought-after Resynthesizer, which is equivalent to Photoshop's Content-Aware Fill tool. Additionally, it doesn't require as much RAM or other resources as Photoshop does. And just like photoshop, GIMP allows you to create masks and layers, make color adjustments, and even create your own editing presets. So it won't take too long for you to get accustomed to it. For starters, GIMP's interface is very user-friendly and easy to navigate, even for beginners. ![]()
